Advancements in the field of cosmetic dentistry
Cosmetic dentistry is the branch of dentistry that deals with restoring natural appearance and improving the beauty of the face by using dental procedures. While normal dentistry deals with curing diseases that affect the teeth, cosmetic dentistry deals mainly with the aesthetic aspect. Several advancements have been made in the field of cost and dentistry in recent years. What were once considered impossible have now become very common thanks to the dedicated efforts of scientists and dentists all over the world.
In recent years, several new biologically compatible materials have been discovered. Biologically compatible materials do not cause adverse effects when they are implanted into living tissues. For instance, dental implants are commonly made from titanium. Titanium is very resistant to corrosion and at the same time is biologically compatible. When dental implants are implanted in the mouth, the immune system of the body doesn’t reject it. Because of this reason, dental implants made up of titanium are very effective.
Several advancements have also been made in the field of anaesthetics. In the earlier years, the dentist didn’t have many options when it came to sedatives. Nitrous oxide was the most commonly used anaesthetic at that time. Most sedatives were administered via the intravenous route. However in recent years, many new sedatives have discovered. These can also be administered orally. These are really a boon to people who have severe dental phobia.
Improvements have also been made in the procedures and surgical techniques. Diagnostic techniques are also being constantly improved. Almost all diagnostic tools available today are computerised. These are not only much faster, but are also very efficient and reliable. For instance, these days computerised x-rays are very common. These have much higher clarity and are also cheaper than traditional photographic film based x-rays scans.
In the near future, we can expect several new improvements in the field of cosmetic dentistry. Technology is moving ahead at a phenomenal rate. Newer technologies and materials are being constantly discovered and developed. In the future, cosmetic dental procedures will not only be cheaper but will also be much more effective. Everyone will be able to afford them.
