Dental Implants–Are They a Good Option for You?

Dental implants are an excellent option to replace lost teeth. They are very tough and have a long-lasting life. Additionally, they completely restore the functionality of the lost teeth. They also have aesthetic appeal–it is very difficult to distinguish a dental implant from normal teeth. On the minus side, they are a little costly and insurance companies generally do not provide cover for dental implants. However, they are worth the investment because they have a long life and provide good functionality.

Dental implants are commonly made from titanium over which the crown is fabricated. Titanium is the material of choice because it is biologically compatible, highly resistant to corrosion and very durable. Additionally, bone cells also integrate well with it. The dental implant consists of a titanium screw, the surface of which has been polished. On the top of the screw, the crown is fabricated. The crown can be made from porcelain or composite materials.

There are two types of dental implants: fibro integrated and osseo integrated. Fibro integrated implants are no longer commonly used. They are not as effective as the latter. Osseo integrated implants, on the other hand, are more popular today because they are very effective. The effectiveness of these implants is from a phenomenon known as osseo integration. When titanium is kept in contact with bone cells, the cells start growing over the titanium and fuse with it. This causes the bone to integrate with titanium, giving the implant strength and stability. The phenomenon was discovered by a Swedish physicist in the 1960s. Ever since, osseo integrated implants have become very popular.

Dental implant surgery is a simple and straightforward procedure. However, it requires a lot of skill on the part of the dental surgeon. First and foremost, the dental surgeon will assess the condition of the teeth and then check if dental implants are feasible. If dental implants are an option, he or she will proceed to surgery. During the surgery, anesthetics are administered to prevent pain. The titanium screw is then placed firmly into the jaw and stitches are made to prevent bleeding. After a few days, the gum line will heal after which the crown is built over the titanium screw.

Dental implants can be very costly. The entire procedure can cost anywhere from $2000-$8000. Costs will vary depending on the quality of material and the fee charged by the dental surgeon. Though costly, dental plans are an excellent option if you have lost teeth.
